【3rd Submission】Artist Statement

People nowadays loves to get the most efficient way to do anything, including communicate with others. The traditional way like writing letters, taking tapes and share with friends are already outdated. Facebox mixed with the new concept of  "status" and the old storage device "tape" and the map, I hope it can lead reflection of their relationship.
Audiences are available to share their status by writing on the "tape" which is made by the paper roll, and put some emoji by using the chops onto it; besides, they can  "check in" their country by the pins and the map. Let's share your information with us in a analogue way!

【2nd Submission】Final Proposal

Facebox 450x430x150 (mm)

After I did some procurement, I know more about the size requirement. The below is the changes I made:
  1. The size of the carton box will be cut about half to suit the scale of the "cassette tape".
  2. There will be a drawer which can make good use of the extra space and symbolizes the traditional storage tools.
Colour Tone
As my idea is showing the traditional (analogue) style of our life, Facebox's appearance will looks like a wooden sculpture, so everything in brown. And the pens and the inkpad will be black, which is the most vintage colour of ink.

Decoration
I want to show the connection between analogue lifestyle and the lifestyle nowadays, so I will draw some logo or some significant symbols of our digital communication network onto the box, for example I will draw a logo for Facebox in the style of Facebook, which can make audiences feel familiar with their digital life.

【2nd Submission】Preparing Materials

As I am not sure my design in the first proposal is successful to make, so I started gathering materials for my work to see if I can get my elements for my design.

I chose the e-shopping platform Taobao for my procurement because there are more styles and efficient for me to buy even I don't know how can I call that ingredient. The below is my shop-list:

wooden pins
they are more suit for a analogue style than the plastic ones as they are made by wood, and seem more original
Roll Paper
DIY rubber chops
for making the emoji chops
Inkpad

【1st Submission】Proposal

Name of Artwork:
Facebox

Idea:
People nowadays loves to get the most efficient way to do anything, including communicate with others. The traditional way like writing letters, taking tapes and share with friends are already outdated. Facebox mixed with the new concept of  "status" and the old storage device "tape" and the map, I hope it can lead reflection of their relationship.

Design:
Facebox looks like a tape, both side of the carton box will be replaced by transparent plastic screen; inside is a roll of paper, visitors can write their status or doodle anything on the paper. The paper roll can be rolled with the handler so they can see others' status. Every steps of interacting with the artwork requires moving their arms but not only fingers, I hope visitors can use their action to share their feelings but not just typing through the smart phone keyboards. There will be emoji chops provided as people nowadays seems cannot express themselves without emoji emotion icons and these will make them feel familiar with their life.

Referring to Hugh Davies's Analogue Art Map, I also want to record where the visitors live just like we can see this information on Facebook, the map will be drawn around the box. Visitors can use the pins to pin their homes in Hong Kong, or maybe I will change to a World Map later. A map on paper is replacing by some mobile map application like Google Map but a paper map can keep the landforms of the specific place at a specific time, that's why paper map is valuable for us to collect.
